Black sand beach near Kalapana, HI.
2009 and 2012

Finally back home after camping Kohala. It’s freaking gorgeous up there. It was whale soup along the coastline on my ride home yesterday. I counted nine in 20 minutes.
I camped on the desert side, which was refreshingly hospitable compared to jungle life. It was 76 and sunny pretty much the whole.time.
This photo was Friday morning along the northwest coast. That silhouette above the horizon is Maui rising in the distance.
Such a day. I’ve been writing for bigislandhawaii.org about the various specacularity of the island I live on. Today took me all around above Hilo and Hamakua area. I hit Kaumana cave first and had the place all to myself until two tour groups showed up. After that I sped north along the hamakua coastline and up to Akaka Falls state park to check out the 428 foot waterfall where I was once again beset upon by a throng of tourists. (It’s a cruise ship day in Hilo) From there I went to several waterfall hikes and drove some hamakua back roads, then headed to Honoli’i to shoot some surfers with my camera. Finally the library in Hilo and wailuku stream. Managed to stay out of the weather until the end, then I rainsuited up for the very wet ride back to the jungle.
